Guided by his background in design and photography, graphic designer and creative director Javier Suarez plays with as few elements as possible to capture everyday scenes in an objective and detailed way. Through the care of composition and light, Javier has illustrated the Bohemia in a space full of organic shapes, different volumes, nothing boring, just like this lamp.
What concept did you want to raise in this illustration?
JSTrying to understand the lamp, its morphology and how its materials react, I was captivated by the play of tones generated by the Bohemia's polycarbonate when light passes through it. I wanted to capture all those tones and textures in the illustration, and that's how I came up with the idea of creating a practically monochromatic scenario, playing with green and its different shades.
What was your inspiration for this illustration, did you take into account any kind of reference?
JSMy process is usually quite intuitive, based on trial and error. I usually start with a very vague idea that takes shape as I go along, adding or removing elements from the composition. For this illustration, I took as a reference different studio photographs of Bohemia to understand how the material reacted to light.
What does the Bohemia lamp evoke for you and in what way are you bringing it to a specific scenario?
JSIt's a lamp with an imposing shape, with a lot of presence and its own personality. It was clear to me that I wanted it to be the center and the protagonist of the illustration. To represent an interior scene, without the need to show the space, I illustrated a window that gives the necessary context, and in turn, frames the lamp, bringing solemnity to the scene and generating contrast between the geometry and the organic shapes.
Is there a feature of Bohemia that stands out to you the most?
The Bohemia and its organic shapes create a play on light and shadow, creating different shades of color as the light passes through.
Working with light is essential for any artist, what role has light played in your collaboration with Marset?
JSLight plays a fundamental role in all my illustrations. My scenes start from a 3D modeling of the composition and from there I position the lights in space as a reference for the final illustration. In the case of this image, the natural outdoor light and the light projected from the lamp itself generate the perfect balance for the scene.
